King Crab & Ketchikan

Ketchikan was our final port in Alaska, and honestly—it might’ve been my favorite. By this point in the trip, we had fully embraced the tourist life.

On a whim, we grabbed tickets to The Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show. After a couple of more grown-up excursions earlier in the week, we were craving something totally kid-friendly. It delivered.

The kids loved it—well, minus the chainsaw noise. But the rest? A hit. We got to cheer for a team, snack on popcorn, and just sit and enjoy the show. Jamie was obsessed with the audience participation and swears it was the best part of Alaska. The log roll on the water sealed the deal for him.

Next up was my personal Alaska bucket list moment: crab legs. I have an endless appetite for crab and there was no way I was leaving without some. We splurged at Ketchikan Crab & Go—Scott called it “just crab,” but I thought the red king crab was buttery, sweet, and totally worth every penny. My only complaint? I didn’t order enough.

With full bellies, we wandered over to Creek Street—a historic boardwalk that used to be the town’s red light district. We missed museum hours and most of the shops were already closed, but I still loved the quirky signs and the old-town, mountain vibe.

We did a little souvenir shopping on our way back to the ship and passed the town’s giant rain gauge, which literally measures rainfall in feet. Classic Ketchikan.

Other than the sail through Tracy Arm Fjord, this stop was the highlight of the trip for me. I’d love to come back when everything’s open and dive deeper into this charming little town.
