A Stellar Space Day in Huntsville

I’m officially on a quest to take more day trips. Our first pick over Labor Day weekend? Huntsville.
The plan was ambitious: local lunch, coffee stop, a quick stroll around downtown, and the Space Museum.
The reality (because… kids)? One stop. One glorious stop. And honestly? We had a blast - pun intended.

We rolled into the U.S. Space & Rocket Center right after lunch and were immediately greeted by massive shuttle and rocket replicas. The kids were all in before we even made it through the doors.

Inside, we kicked things off in the kid-centered STEM area, which was full of hands-on activities like air tubes, light manipulation, energy creation, and an earthquake simulator that was both educational and slightly chaotic.
Once we moved into the main museum, everyone found their niche. Jamie was mesmerized by all the rockets. June made a beeline for the astronaut outfits. Scott gravitated toward the weather section (of course). I liked walking through parts of the astronaut training exhibits. It was fascinating and humbling, considering how winded I get climbing stairs. Still dreaming of space camp though…
Outside, we explored even more rocket replicas, helicopters, and a mock version of the moon’s surface. The kids were convinced they were basically astronauts at this point.
Our final stop was another building packed with interactive exhibits and a deeper look into the development of the NASA program. A NASA scientist was speaking beneath a shuttle suspended from the ceiling which felt incredibly cool. There was also a kids’ play area, which turned out to be the perfect place for us to rest our feet while the kids burned off the last of their energy before the drive home.
After doing what we do best (buying souvenirs in the gift shop), we wrapped up the day with a stop at Beignets & Brew. Nothing ends a space adventure quite like powdered sugar and caffeine. We made it home just in time for bedtime, and Jamie is already asking when we can go back.

Day trip success: achieved 🚀
